Overview

If you have a head for heights and are able to understand building plans, this qualification will help you gain the skills you need to work in the construction industry. As a roofer, your work could range from re-slating the roof on a house, to restoring the lead sheets on an old building.

This qualification is aimed at anyone that is looking to secure a career as a roofer in the construction industry.

You will be assessed against a set of performance and knowledge statements which have been derived from National Occupational Standards for your occupational area. You will be assessed by an occupationally competent and qualified assessor whose job is to work with you and help you complete your qualification.

Assessment Process 

OSAT (On Site Assessment & Training)

Your assessor will visit you between 2-4 times (in general) to collect evidence relating to the qualification you’re doing. Using methods such as Observation (watching) and Questioning/Discussion they will collect what’s needed to prove your competence at your trade.

A third party reference (Witness Testimony) can be used as another source of evidence stating the work you do on site and that you are capable of working safely.

Videos and recorded discussions are sometimes used as they are a good way of collecting substantial evidence in both practical ability and level of understanding

Your assessor will work with you to plan the assessments and methods used taking into account any of your individual needs.

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Install interlocking tiles to variable gauge
  • Install plain tiles
  • Install regular sized natural slates
  • Installation of plain tiles
  •  Installation of interlocking tiles to variable gauge
  • Installation of natural slates

There are no formal entry requirements to take this qualification. This qualification can be undertaken without any previous training or qualifications in this subject area, however we do require at least 3 years experience in the trade

On completion of this qualification you will have obtained the skills, knowledge and understanding and demonstrated competence to progress on to a higher level qualification in the same or similar occupational area or enable entry into supervisory and management positions within the workplace.

Industry will accept the qualification on its own as entry to a job role.

Roofing NVQ Level 2 FAQs

Although you don’t necessarily need qualifications to be a roofer if you have already got experience or relevant training under your belt, the best way into roofing if you haven’t done any construction work before is to opt for a Level 2 Diploma in Roof Slating and Tiling. This will give you what you need to make a start as a roofer.

Like any skill, roofing can be easy to learn the basics, but hard to master. Through repetition and practice, it will become easier over time.
